The East Lothian town of Haddington is the administrative centre of the county. Back in the 19th century the town hosted a series of race meetings administered by the East Yeomanry Hunt Group. The earliest recorded meeting was staged on Thursday 20th April 1826 on Gullane Links. Races continued annually, with the meeting often held at a number of venues, and on occasions more frequently than once a year. On Wednesday 13th April 1864 the chosen course was at Garleton Hills, 1 ½ miles north of Haddington, when the Linlithgow & Stirlingshire Hunt Sweepstakes was won by Major McBarnet’s King Dan. The same course was used the next year on Saturday 13th May when the Open Hunt Cup went to Tam Glen for Mr J Elliot.  In 1869 there were meetings by the East Lothian Yeomanry at Dunbar on 17th July and a further meeting for the Mid-Lothian Yeomanry at Musselburgh on Saturday 31st July 1869. After the National Hunt Committee introduced new rules in 1870 the East Lothian meetings continued as Hunt meetings.
